Belle's Bedroom Project
During the final year of my animation education, I wanted to work on a new environment project that would provide a fun challenge. I consulted with my 3D modeling Professor Paul Conner about a new project. We debated on a bedroom environment. A simple environment with a basic room layout was the goal. He explained to me that the bedroom needed to tell a story and it would have to be something that would be recognizable to the viewer. Going onto Pinterest I created boards and found numerous inspirational ideas for a bedroom design. I found pictures of pop culture bedrooms that were themed to decades of gaming, anime, and Disney fanatics. Paul suggested to create a rooms about sports that has another hobby interest like a football player wanting to be a ballerina. When I made new boards, the photos I gather didn't give me the right inspirational spark I was looking for. Then I thought why not do a room about a fictional character wanting to be something else. For example, what if Wendy Darling wanted to be pirate after her adventures in Neverland. I pitched the ideas to Paul and we finally came to a decision to make a bedroom about a iconic character.
He suggested since I was a fanatic of Disney films, to make 5 bedrooms from the Disney Princess line up. I narrowed my choices to Elsa, Moana, Snow White, Ariel, and finally Belle. I went into Photoshop and started drawing out the concept of the bedroom. I started out with Belle's bedroom. I wanted the bedrooms to be something that happened after the princesses lived happily ever after.
For Belle, I wanted to add more to her bedroom. Since the films showed Belle's bedroom it was spacious and had limited furniture for the backdrops. I took a step further and looked into Kingdom Hearts 2 a Disney video game where you can explore Belle's room in the Beauty and the Beast world. I encountered that both designs left a few things out that needed to be in a bedroom. For example every bedroom has a nightstand to place a light, a glass of water, or a book to read before going to bed. I also thought since the Beast allowed Belle all access to his library, it would come to a point where she would take a stack of books back to her bedroom. So I added a bookcase that she would store her books. I made her enchanted object friends without faces to make it look like their camouflage form when they were hiding from visitors to the castle.
