Sorcerer's Tower Project

Another project I worked on in between breaks was the Sorcerer's Tower. This tower is located in the same fantasy world as the Crystal Cavern. In the world of Marverse Town, the main heroine gets herself trapped in this world only to discover that she is going to save this world from the chaos of Queen Arlene who brought malice to the land. Through the heroine's journey she gains allies that follow her to stop the queen. After completing the trials in the Cave of Destiny, the wise crystal owl advises the heroine and her friends to go and seek out the powerful sorcerer who resides is a tower.

This tower was a challenge due to it being one of the first exterior solo projects I've worked on. What inspired me to make the tower was by looking at European architecture of buildings. Something about how they design the rooftops window frames, and overall scope of the design gave me an opportunity to take different parts of buildings and create this hybrid tower base. To give it a fantasy look, I looked at two towers that were designed for a video game and a cinematic motion picture. They were Yen Sid's Tower from Kingdom Hearts 2, and Rapunzel's tower from Tangled.

When looking at Yen Sid's Tower, I noticed the wonky design of the tower where part of the building slants to one side. I didn't want to make my tower have an odd shape where it would slant when looking at it from a physics stand point. However, I did love the details of how they added the stars and crescent moon shapes on the tower to match Yen Sid's magical hat. As for Rapunzel's Tower, I was really intrigued on how Disney designed the top of the tower to make it look like a home. When comparing the towers I wanted to make my tower look magical but not feel like it was a princess trapped in the tower.

In the end I made the tower where you had a view from any direction, while making look like it was part of the castle. It was originally set on a flat bit of ground. But with adjustments I wanted to make it look like it was on top of a hill to survey the land. While being on a hill, I wanted to make it grand and mystical climbing up to the tower doors. Since it is a  powerful sorcerer living there, I wanted to make it a wise magical force. I sculpted the steps to shape them like spell books. The hats that go to each side are to represent a magical guardian that has lived inside this tower. The crystals represented the 6 elements of the world. They are fire, water, air, earth, light, and darkness. Each element has a colored crystal as well as symbols craved into the pedestal.
