Troll Character Animation

When we were working on transferring our short to a trailer, our animators split the animation down to specific scenes. Since I was working on motion capture for Troll and Hunter's movements, I worked on two animation scenes with Troll and Granny. This was the first time I was animating characters for a production. When I was animating the characters, my main goal was getting the right facial animation to the characters. This was something I learned from Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. The important part of character animation is showing what is the character thinking and what they are doing.

For Troll I wanted to give his expressions that you could understand what he was thinking. Since our trailer was a non-dialogue piece, the motion the expression was crucial. I used myself as reference for the Troll's movement and expressions. When we were creating the rigs, I made faces in the mirror for the rigging team to create sliders for the animators working on these sequences.
