Granny's Garden

One of the largest environments we had to make for the story was Granny's garden. Granny is an herbalist who lives in the woods creating medicine for people and creatures. What is a major part of character was her collection of herbal plants. We wanted to make a vast garden for Granny to grow her supplies as well as edible vegetables.  In the original story she was far away from the village where they paid the Hunter to go kill the Troll for a reward. We also had her shed near the house as a animal care house for injured animals. With cutting items in our story, we removed creating animals that Troll would help Granny while he was recovering.

Since we wanted a garden, our major goal was not to make the scenery so green like too much pink in a Barbie dream house. To accomplish our goal, I volunteered myself as the plant researcher to look for plants that would provide actual medical remedies. With my research, I looked at specific plants that would be located near the Northern European part of the world.  I took a couple of weeks looking at the list of plants and hunting for reference images of what they would look like in a garden vs in the wild.

For the garden side, I went to local plant shops and bought seeds of plants that were on the list and photograph them weekly to provide model variation to the modeling team. As a result we took some of the photographs I've taken from the weekly check in to help the team. Our team wanted to expand from early growth and see how it compares to gardens that have grown for years. With some luck I took my research and explored a botanic gardener that would do weekly shows on Denver's 9News. His backyard was a lush tropical paradise of plants. He was pleased to help by allowing me to photograph parts of his garden for the research.

With all our references, we were able to create our assets and be able to put together for our sequences. For the garden, I was in charge of modeling squash, carrots, a wheel barrel, an reedit of the shed, compost bin, stepping stone rocks, lanterns, lamb's ear, and garden rocks. I teamed up Maddie Murphy on set dressing the scene. We wanted to split the environment for referencing garden boxes, as well as collaborate between the two of us if we need to add or subtract parts of the garden.
