The Hunter
During the production of this trailer, it was originally a short that would be about 3 to 5 minutes that would tell a story about a troll and a granny. We had our main leading characters but we needed a bad guy or obstacle that would bring the Troll to Granny. My team came up with the idea that maybe it was an evil wizard that would plan on taking the Troll's heart for his potions. Our instructor was against the idea, he suggested a shaman. We tried a shaman and it began to cause trouble on how he would go about getting the Troll. In the end we went with a hunter that would be hunting the Troll for game. However, this hunter would be something like Elmer Fudd from Chuck Jones' Looney Tunes shorts. This was a guy that would lurk in shadows and to the climax we would reveal his face.
When we were coming up with concept art for our antagonist, we wanted to figure out if we want him more like a viking or some type or warrior with outfits that would suit Northern European climates. Beyond clothes we were discussing on his body type. For example should he be having a muscular body like the Might Thor from Marvel or have him be a skinny twig like body. Eventually we went with a mid athletic body that would be enough to wield an ax as well be a skillful archer. Originally the Hunter would be get cuts on his face from battling the Troll during the first encounter. Unfortunately we had to cut the sequence but we still kept the scars as part of his design.
I was in charge of modeling and sculpting the character for the thesis. The Hunter was probably one of my favorite characters I made during my program because I had more time to work on adjusting his design and having him be animated. During some of the rework stages I consulted with my character sculpting professor Paul Conner as well as get feedback from two Disney animators Zack Petroc and Andreas Deja. With their feedback, the Hunter was sculpted to fit the needs for the thesis.
